Abstract

This study examines how Darren Aronofsky's film Black Swan (2010) depicts maternal relationships and how it affects the protagonist's psychological growth. By applying Donald Winnicott's psychoanalytic theory, specifically, the notions of the "holding environment," the "good enough mother," and the "true self and false self". The study uses content analysis to examine the complicated and harmful relationships that exist between Nina Sayers and her mother, Erica. Nina's identity formation, mental health, and self-esteem are negatively impacted by Erica's controlling and obsessive behavior, which produces an unhealthy environment, according to the analysis. Key elements from the movie show Nina's battle with anorexia, hallucination, and insecurity, highlighting the catastrophic consequences of a toxic mother-daughter relationship. This study highlights the significance of a nurturing and supportive mother role in promoting the growth of mental health by demonstrating the challenges faced by children whose mothers place unreasonable demands on them or fall short of the standards she has set. Using psychoanalytic lenses based on the Black Swan movie, it adds a significant perspective on how mothers should treat their daughters by demonstrating that there are instances when having too high expectations may be harmful.
