Background : Hypertension and sleep disorders are two common health problems in the elderly and are interrelated. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can worsen sleep quality, and vice versa. Elderly people with poor sleep quality are at risk of experiencing increased blood pressure due to imbalances in the nervous and hormonal systems. Gamelan music therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that has been proven to have a relaxing effect through a stable rhythm and tempo, thus potentially lowering blood pressure while improving sleep quality.
Objective :This study aims to determine the effect of gamelan music therapy on reducing blood pressure and improving sleep quality in elderly people with hypertension in Kujon Hamlet, Wonodoyo Village, Cepogo District, Boyolali Regency.
Methods : This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. A sample of 52 elderly people was selected using a total sampling technique and divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group was given regular gamelan music therapy, while the control group received no treatment. The instruments used were a blood pressure observation sheet and a PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) questionnaire to measure sleep quality. Data analysis in this study used appropriate statistical tests, including the Chi-Square test. Results : This study showed a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and a significant increase in sleep quality in the intervention group (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the control group did not experience significant changes. Conclusion : Gamelan music therapy has been proven effective in lowering blood pressure and improving sleep quality in elderly people with hypertension.
