Abstract

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and fetal
death. Early detection of the risk of preeclampsia is
essential. This study aims to analyze the application of the
Certainty Factor method in an expert system for early
detection of preeclampsia risk, identify preeclampsia
symptoms based on trimester of pregnancy, and develop
recommendations for developing a knowledge base that
matches the characteristics of preeclampsia symptoms. The
study used a literature review method through article
searches in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases, a
selection process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria,
extraction, descriptive analysis, and synthesis of eligible
articles. The analysis focused on the application of the
Certainty Factor method, knowledge sources, symptoms
used, inference techniques, diagnostic results, and the
characteristics of preeclampsia symptoms in each trimester
of pregnancy. The results show that the Certainty Factor
method has been widely applied in expert systems to
support early detection of preeclampsia and other
pregnancy-related diseases through rule-based reasoning
and diagnostic confidence level calculations. Research still
uses a static knowledge base without considering changes
in symptom characteristics according to gestational age. It
is proposed that the development of a knowledge base
structured by trimester of pregnancy aims to improve
inference accuracy and reduce misinterpretation of
symptoms.
